Independent We Stand

Independence Day, America’s birthday, the Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. One of the most important days in our history. We will celebrate with family and friends, each in our own way.

I plan to honor our history by renewing my commitments, as a patriot and as a supporter my local, independently owned businesses. I’ve made it a point for many years to support the “local guy”.  Why? It just seemed right. They are members of the community, they are passionate about their businesses and serious about their products and services. Quite frankly, so am I!  

Independent businesses are experiencing a renaissance today. “Consider just a few optimistic facts for the New Year: nationally, independent bookstores have grown by more than 20% since 2009; American craft breweries collectively now sell more than 16.1 million barrels of beer annually, outpacing, for the first time, Budweiser. This isn’t the only evidence that independently owned businesses are making a major comeback…Since 1990, small businesses (< $7.5 million in sales and < 500 employees) have added millions of employees, while big businesses have shed millions.”   Tim Wu, New Yorker Magazine, 1/24/2015.   As independent business owners, we may not feel that our revenue is lighting the world on fire at present, but independent businesses remain key contributors to the economy while many chain-owned or big box stores are wavering or see major challenges ahead.

Working Together

When I came across the organization Independent We Stand [www.independentwestand.org], I decided to pledge my commitment and join the movement of over 120,000 people at the time.  I find that doing business with an independently owned business makes tremendous sense.  The ownership and staff are so much more knowledgeable and they demonstrate a sincere interest in their customers. Whether buying meat from the meat market or a significant appliance or equipment item, it’s comforting to know you are buying fresh or that the appliance or equipment comes from a retailer who thoroughly understands and provides excellent post-sale support and service of the product. And to also know that through supporting the local business, more of the dollars from each sale go to support the community.

KPM is honored to be associated with and serve our dealer network who proudly serve and support their local communities and we celebrate all independently owned businesses on this 4th of July and every day.
